A gas burner is the biggest source of nitrogen dioxide in most homes — and children breathe more of it, pound for pound, than adults do.
A gas flame looks clean. No smoke, no soot, just heat. But every time it burns, it puts nitrogen dioxide (NO2) into the kitchen air, and in a closed room the level climbs fast. NO2 irritates the airways, and a child’s airways are smaller and still developing.
What the pooled data shows
In 2013, Weiwei Lin, Bert Brunekreef and Ulrike Gehring published a meta-analysis in the International Journal of Epidemiology. They combined 41 studies of children 18 and under, comparing gas cooking and measured indoor NO2 against asthma and wheeze. Cooking with gas was linked to a 32% increase in the odds of asthma (odds ratio 1.32, 95% confidence interval 1.18 to 1.48). The effect held across ages and across regions.

The nitrogen dioxide itself tracked with wheeze: each 15 ppb rise in indoor NO2 came with about 15% higher odds of current wheeze (OR 1.15, CI 1.06 to 1.25). One link was weaker. NO2 on its own against asthma landed at OR 1.09, and its confidence interval crossed 1.0, so that particular association wasn’t statistically significant. The gas-cooking signal was the solid one.
Why the kitchen is the hotspot
A gas cooktop with no hood — or a hood that only recirculates air through a filter — keeps the NO2 in the room. Peak levels during cooking can pass outdoor air-quality limits within minutes. The fix isn’t complicated: a range hood that vents outside, run every time you cook, plus an open window for cross-ventilation. An induction or electric burner removes the combustion source entirely, but you don’t have to replace the stove to lower the exposure.

A hood that exhausts outdoors, not one that recirculates, is what actually pulls NO2 out of the kitchen.
What this means for your home
If you cook with gas and someone in the house has asthma or wheezes, ventilation is the first thing to check. Turn the hood on before you light the burner and leave it running a few minutes after you’re done. Crack a window. Use the back burners for the biggest pots, since they sit closer to the hood’s capture zone. And if you don’t know how high your kitchen actually gets, measure it before you guess.
A note on certainty
These are observational studies, so they show association rather than proof, and gas cooking clusters with other housing and income factors that studies can only partly adjust for. Odds ratios describe groups, not any single kitchen. The NO2-and-asthma link on its own wasn’t statistically significant. What did hold, consistently and across regions, was the tie between gas cooking and childhood asthma — enough that better kitchen ventilation is worth doing either way.
