Mold usually gets filed under allergy and asthma — wheeze, a stuffy nose, an itchy throat. One of the largest studies ever run on mold and mood points somewhere less expected: the risk of depression. And the researchers behind it did not go looking for that result. They went looking to rule it out.
What the study measured
Edmond Shenassa and colleagues at Brown University analyzed the World Health Organization’s Large Analysis and Review of European Housing and Health Status (LARES): 5,882 adults in 2,982 households across eight European cities, surveyed in 2002 and 2003 and published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2007. Trained interviewers visited each home and checked for dampness and mold by eye — spots on walls and ceilings — rather than relying only on what residents reported. Depression was gauged from symptoms such as decreased appetite, low self-esteem, and disturbed sleep. It was, at the time, the largest investigation of the mold–mood link and the first conducted outside the United Kingdom.
The framing matters. After a few earlier UK studies hinted at a connection, Shenassa’s group expected to make it disappear. “We thought that once we statistically accounted for factors that could clearly contribute to depression — things like employment status and crowding — we would see any link vanish,” he said. “But the opposite was true.”

What they found
Living in a damp, moldy home was tied to higher odds of depression, and the effect climbed with how much dampness and mold was present. Compared with residents of dry homes, the adjusted odds of depression ran about 34 to 44 percent higher across exposure levels — odds ratios of 1.39 for minimal exposure, 1.44 for moderate, and 1.34 for extensive. The association held after accounting for income, employment, crowding, and other personal and housing characteristics, which is exactly what the team expected to erase the signal and did not.
Why a damp home would affect mood
The study points to two plausible routes, and neither requires mold to poison the brain directly. The first is a sense of lost control: living somewhere you feel you cannot fix or keep clean is itself linked to depression. The second is physical — mold-related illness such as wheezing, fatigue, and a lingering cold or sore throat, the kind of low-grade sickness that wears on mood over weeks and months. As Shenassa put it, “If you are sick from mold, and feel you can’t get rid of it, it may affect your mental health.” Both pathways are inferred from the pattern in the data, not proven inside a single survey.
What this means for your home
The reassuring part is that this exposure is fixable, because it is really about water. Keep indoor humidity in a reasonable range (roughly 30 to 50 percent). Run the bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans and vent them outside, clear condensation off cold windows, and repair leaks and ground water before materials stay wet for weeks. Follow your nose, too — a musty smell counts even when nothing is visible. Be wary of what gets sold against damp: “mold-proof” paints, purifying gadgets, ozone machines, and fogging sprays rarely address why a home is wet, and the EPA warns against running ozone generators in occupied rooms. The EPA’s own guidance is simpler: clean up the mold and fix the water problem, because without the second step the mold returns.
A note on certainty: this is a cross-sectional, observational study. It shows an association, not that mold causes depression, and the authors say so plainly. People who are already low may notice or report household damp differently, which can inflate a link, and depression was based on a symptom report rather than a clinical interview. What survives all of that: in a very large, multi-country sample, a link the researchers tried to debunk instead held up under adjustment and tracked with the amount of dampness present.
