Picture the harm from a moldy home as a dramatic allergic reaction and you picture it wrong. In the population numbers it shows up as ordinary asthma — and it accounts for a surprising share of it.

Most people file a damp basement or a musty closet under “deal with it later.” Two researchers put a number on what “later” costs. When you combine how much a damp, moldy home raises one person’s asthma risk with how many U.S. homes are damp, the mold-linked share of asthma is far larger than a rare-reaction framing would suggest.

What the researchers did

Dan Mudarri and William Fisk published the estimate in Indoor Air in 2007. They didn’t run a new field study. They combined two things that were already known: the added risk of asthma for someone living in a damp or moldy home, taken from a meta-analysis by Fisk and colleagues that pooled dozens of studies, and national data on how common dampness and visible mold are in U.S. housing. Put those together with a standard attributable-fraction calculation and you get the share of current asthma that would not be there if damp, moldy homes were dry.

Applied to the roughly 21.8 million Americans reported to have asthma at the time, that 21% works out to about 4.6 million people (plausibly 2.7 to 6.3 million) whose asthma is attributable to dampness and mold in the home. The authors also put a price on it: near $3.5 billion a year in asthma costs, with a range of $2.1 to $4.8 billion.

Why the number lands so high

The per-home risk isn’t dramatic on its own. Damp housing raises the odds of asthma modestly, not by orders of magnitude. What pushes the population number up is how common the exposure is: damp or moldy conditions turn up in a large share of homes, so even a moderate per-home risk spreads across a lot of people. A modest effect across a widespread exposure adds up to millions of cases.

What this means for your home

The lever here is water, not the mold you can see. Wipe a colony off drywall and the moisture that grew it is still there, so it returns and the exposure continues. The durable fix is finding the water source, repairing it, keeping indoor humidity below about 60%, and ventilating the rooms that make steam. If you can smell that musty note, you’re already inside the range these studies were counting.

The catch is that the water is usually somewhere you can’t see it: behind cabinetry, under flooring, inside a wall cavity, in a crawlspace. That’s what a room-by-room assessment is for — finding the moisture and biological residue before it becomes part of the one-in-five figure.

A note on certainty

This is a modeled estimate, not a headcount of real patients. It assumes the dampness–asthma association is at least partly causal, which the underlying studies support but can’t prove, and it inherits the uncertainty in both the risk estimate and the prevalence of damp housing — which is why the range runs from 12% to 29%, not a single tidy figure. Dampness also tends to track with older housing and tighter budgets, and while the analysis accounts for known factors, some of the link may reflect those conditions rather than mold itself. What holds up across the caveats: the everyday burden of damp housing on asthma is large, and it’s the kind of exposure you can actually remove.
