When a child won’t stay asleep, the house itself is rarely the first suspect. A large German cohort study suggests it belongs on the list.
Most sleep advice for kids points at screens, bedtimes, and sugar. A study of nearly 1,700 ten-year-olds points somewhere less obvious: the walls. Children living with visible mold or dampness at home were more likely to have every sleep problem the researchers measured.
What the study measured
Carla Tiesler and colleagues at Helmholtz Zentrum München and the University of Munich followed children in LISAplus, a German population-based birth cohort, and published the analysis in Environmental Research in 2015. They had complete data on 1,719 ten-year-olds — whether the home currently had visible mold or dampness, and how the child slept. Thirteen percent of parents reported visible mold or dampness at home.
Children in those homes were more likely to have every sleep problem the study measured, and the models were adjusted for study center, sex, age, and parental education.
1.77× · 2.52× · 1.68× — higher odds among children in damp or moldy homes: any sleep problem 1.77 times higher (95% CI 1.21 to 2.60), trouble sleeping through the night 2.52 times higher (1.27 to 5.00), and short sleep under nine hours 1.68 times higher (1.09 to 2.61) (Tiesler et al., 2015).
The night-waking signal was the strongest of the four. In plain terms, children in damp or moldy homes were markedly more likely to wake in the night and to fall short of a full night’s sleep.
Why a damp room might cost sleep
The likely route is the airway. Mold and dampness inflame noses and lungs — the same body of research ties them to rhinitis, wheeze, and asthma — and a blocked, itchy nose or a nighttime cough breaks sleep and cuts it short. Damp rooms also hold more dust mites and a heavier load of microbial particles. The authors point to this directly: when they set aside children who had allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, only the short-sleep link stayed significant, which suggests an allergic, stuffy-nose pathway is part of what is going on.
How firm is the finding?
This is an observational study, so it shows an association, not proof that mold causes the lost sleep. Both the mold and the sleep were reported by parents on a questionnaire, which can blur the edges, and damp homes differ from dry ones in other ways beyond mold. What survives the caveats: across four separate sleep measures the risk pointed the same way, the night-waking signal was strong, and it fits what is already well established about damp air and children’s airways.
The useful question is what happens when you remove the damp. A Cochrane systematic review of dampness-and-mold remediation found that repairing the moisture and removing the mold reduced respiratory symptoms and infections in both adults and children. The evidence base is modest, but the direction is consistent: take away the damp, and the airway complaints that fragment sleep tend to ease.
What gets lost in the mold marketing
The shelves are full of mold sprays, foggers, “air-purifying” ozone generators, and settle-plate test kits. The U.S. EPA is blunt about two of them: ozone generators are not safe or effective at cleaning indoor air, and a petri-dish kit that grows something in every home tells you almost nothing, because mold spores are present in all indoor air. What works is plain: find the water source and dry it out.
What this means for your home
Find and fix the moisture — roof and plumbing leaks, a wet basement or crawlspace, condensation running down cold walls and windows. Keep indoor humidity in the 30 to 50 percent range and run bath and kitchen exhaust fans. Dry any water damage within 48 hours, before mold takes hold. Clean small patches of mold on hard surfaces yourself; for anything larger than about a square meter, or hidden behind walls, get it assessed. In a child’s bedroom especially, a musty smell or a damp patch is worth taking seriously.
A note on certainty: the odds ratios come from a single observational cohort in which parents reported both the mold and the sleep, so the study cannot prove cause and your home may differ. What isn’t in dispute is that damp, moldy air irritates children’s airways — and lowering indoor moisture is a low-risk step you control.
