A musty nursery reads like a housekeeping problem. One birth cohort that tracked mold and children for seven years read it as an exposure — and the year that mattered was the first one.
Most parents treat a faint basement smell the way they’d treat dust: wipe it down, run a fan, move on. A study that followed children from infancy tells a different story. The mold a baby lives with in the first year lined up with whether that same child had asthma at seven.
What the cohort measured
Reponen and colleagues, writing in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (2011), followed 176 children in Cincinnati from age 1 to age 7. All came from families at higher risk for allergy, so the study started with children already more likely than average to develop asthma. Instead of asking parents whether they’d seen mold, the team measured it: a DNA test of house dust that scores 36 mold species into a single number, the Environmental Relative Moldiness Index, or ERMI. Each home was scored at age 1 and again at age 7.
What turned up at seven
By age 7, 31 of the 176 children — about 18% — had asthma. Children whose homes scored high on mold (an ERMI of 5.2 or above) at age 1 had 2.6 times the odds of asthma at 7 compared with children from low-mold homes, after adjusting for other factors.

The timing is the surprising part
Here’s what changes how you read it. A high mold score at age 7 showed no link to asthma at 7. Only the score from infancy did. The first year of life, while the lungs and immune system are still forming, is when the exposure seemed to count.
Mold wasn’t the biggest factor in the model, and the study is honest about that. A parent with asthma carried higher odds (4.0), and so did an allergy to dust mites (4.1). Air conditioning in the home lowered the odds (0.3). Mold sits alongside those — a real risk, and one of the few you can physically remove from a house.

What this means for your home
You can’t change a family history of asthma. You can change the water that feeds mold. If you’re expecting, or moving a baby into an older home, the useful window is early: find damp spots and leaks, keep indoor humidity under about 60%, vent the bathroom and kitchen, and deal with a musty smell before it settles in as a year-round exposure. ERMI is a research tool, not a drugstore test — but what it stands in for, damp conditions that grow mold, is something you can locate and fix.
A note on certainty
This is a single cohort of 176 higher-risk children, so the exact numbers may not carry over to every family, and the confidence interval is wide (1.10 to 6.26 — its lower edge sits close to no effect). It’s observational: it shows an association, not proof that mold caused the asthma. Damp homes also tend to be older and lower-income, and while the analysis adjusts for known factors, some can remain. Still, the direction fits a larger body of dampness research, which is why lowering indoor mold is widely recommended.
